advocacy

A medical advocate is someone who…

  • Can be present with you during medical appointments. This can help you feel more comfortable and supported to self-advocate, or to have me advocate on your behalf. I typically provide this for people in larger bodies who may be denied medical care due to anti-fat bias in medical practice.

  • Help you to make informed decisions about your care. I will provide you with a judgement-free space to explore your options as outlined by your provider, and/or assist you in further researching or finding resources to help you along your decision-making path. I am not a medical provider, so cannot and will not make medical recommendations.

  • Advocate for your rights. I will advocate that you be treated with respect and dignity, and I will help you to get the care that you need to the best of my ability.

  • Help you to resolve problems with your care. If you are having problems with your healthcare providers, insurance company, would like to request amendment to a medical record, file a complaint or understand your rights, I can support you in understanding and/or taking next steps.

  • Research and provide you with information. I can assist you in finding research, information, and resources to help support you in self-advocacy or to help create a fuller picture than we are often presented with within the medical industrial complex.

I know that navigating the healthcare system can be difficult, but I’m here to help you every step of the way. Take a deep breath and please reach out for support.

What is a medical advocate?

OUR TIME TOGETHER

our first steps will be…

I’ll start by getting to know you and your medical history. This includes understanding your diagnosis, treatment plan, and any challenges you are facing. These steps will help us decide what is needed and how I can support you.

  1. Identify your needs and goals. Once I have a good understanding of your experience, I will work with you to collaboratively identify your specific needs and goals.

  2. Develop a plan of action. Once we have outlined your needs and goals, we will work together to develop a plan of action. This plan may include things like communicating with your healthcare team, researching treatment options, or other actions to support you moving forward.

  3. Advocate for you. Throughout your entire experience with me as your advocate, I will advocate for your needs and goals in concrete ways. This may involve attending appointments with you, communicating with your healthcare team, or helping the you file a complaint.
